4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD OBTAIN A PERMIT FOR ANY JOB OR PROJECT

1. BUILDING CODE PERMITS: ANY HOMEOWNER, BUSINESS OWNER, ILLEGAL CONTRACTOR, LICENSED CONTRACTOR, Friend, Neighbor, Handyman, or Family Member working on a job or project will need a Building Permit from the City or County jurisdictional district they live in for every Job, Project, Construction alteration, enhancement, or erection, INCLUDING WATER HEATERS! Violations of Building Permit laws can cause fines, penalties, the disconnect of public utilities, and imprisonment.

Building Codes are regulations governing the design, construction, alteration, and maintenance of structures. The jurisdictional agency requires building Permits for most jobs and projects to ensure that they have enforced Building Codes as established by their agency. Once a job or project has begun, and they authenticated a Permit then they perform sequential inspections to validate the workmanship, code compliance, and performance of the job or project under the terms and conditions of the building permit.

When a property owner sells their property, or a title change transpires, they must disclose documented proof to the new owner that any enhancements, modifications, alterations, or additions done to the building structure or property was permitted from the jurisdictional agency they live in. If it was discovered during the sale or title change transaction that the structure or facility had enhancements, modifications, or additions done without Permits, the owner or seller would be liable to make all corrections necessary to get code compliance permits before a deed or title transfer could occur.

An unlicensed individual or company cannot get Building Permits and Licensed Contractors or property owners can get a permit.  The Contractor’s State License Board, (CSLB) requires LICENSED CONTRACTORS to get a Building Permit for every Job, Project, or Construction alteration, enhancement, or erection.

Contractors who violate the law are subject to disciplinary action by the CSLB including civil penalty assessments of up to $5,000 per violation, an order of correction that requires payment of permit fees, and any assessed penalties imposed by the local building department, and suspension or revocation of their license.
