What Counts as High Water Pressure?

Pressure varies by property, elevation, water source and plumbing design, so there is no single “perfect” number for every home. The important threshold is that plumbing codes treat static pressure above 80 psi as excessive and call for pressure regulation. A real pressure test is more useful than judging by how strong a faucet feels.

Strong Flow Is Not the Same as Healthy Pressure

High static pressure means the plumbing system is sitting under excessive pressure even when fixtures are not actively running. That differs from normal flow demand, temporary pressure spikes and water hammer. Testing helps separate those conditions before parts are replaced unnecessarily.

A pressure regulator can reduce excessive incoming pressure, but only after the cause and existing plumbing layout are evaluated.

How to Test Household Water Pressure

1. Use a pressure gauge at an appropriate hose connection.
Attach the gauge securely to a hose bib or suitable test connection.

2. Stop normal water use.
For a static reading, fixtures and water-using equipment should not be actively drawing water.

3. Open the valve fully and read the gauge.
The result shows the static pressure available at that test point.

4. Investigate an excessive or unstable reading.
If pressure is high, changes significantly or creeps upward, the next step is to evaluate the PRV, incoming supply and related plumbing conditions.

The public water system may operate at a pressure higher than the home’s plumbing should receive directly.

No PRV Where One Is Needed

Some properties may lack a pressure-reducing valve even though incoming pressure requires regulation.

If incoming static pressure is excessive, a properly selected and installed PRV can reduce pressure before it reaches the home. If a regulator already exists, the problem may instead be adjustment, wear, pressure creep, thermal expansion or another system condition.
