Eight concerns, eight different treatment questions
These guides share a testing-first framework, but they are not interchangeable. Each issue has different sources, plumbing effects, health or aesthetic context and treatment limits.
Signs you might notice
Hard Water
White scale, spots and poor soap performance may be consistent with hard water, but testing is the dependable way to measure hardness and plan treatment.
Iron in Water
Orange or brown staining may be consistent with iron, but color alone cannot identify the form, concentration or source. Test before choosing equipment.
Manganese in Water
Dark or black staining can be consistent with manganese, but appearance cannot confirm the constituent or determine the right treatment.
Hydrogen Sulfide in Water
A rotten-egg odor may be consistent with hydrogen sulfide, but the source can be groundwater, plumbing, sulfur bacteria or a water heater.
Acidic Water
Blue-green staining or corrosion may be consistent with low-pH water and copper release, but testing is needed to identify pH and the plumbing source.

Nitrates in Water
Nitrate cannot be diagnosed by sight, taste or smell. A certified laboratory test is necessary, especially for a private drinking-water well.

Arsenic in Water
Arsenic cannot be confirmed by sight, taste or smell. Test the individual drinking-water source and use the result to select any treatment.

Bacteria in Well Water
Bacteria cannot be ruled in or out by appearance. Use a properly collected laboratory sample and follow health-department guidance for an unsafe result.
