What it is and where it can come from

Hydrogen sulfide is a gas with a characteristic odor. Sulfur-related bacteria and chemical reactions in water or a water heater can also contribute to odor.
It can occur under low-oxygen groundwater conditions, be produced by bacteria, or arise in hot-water equipment. Whether odor appears in hot water, cold water or both is an important clue.

What testing can tell you

A professional investigation should document where and when odor occurs and may test source water, plumbing and treatment parameters. H2S can dissipate, so sampling technique matters.
Symptoms are clues, not a water test. Smell alone cannot identify concentration, distinguish H2S from sulfur bacteria, or prove the well is the source.
Comparing hot and cold water helps narrow the odor source before testing.

Whole-house or point-of-use? Whole-house treatment may be considered when source water affects the building. A single drinking tap does not address shower or hot-water odor.

Treatment limitations

A softener, sediment filter, UV unit or generic RO system is not a universal H2S solution. A rotten-egg odor can have more than one cause, so testing and source diagnosis matter before treatment is selected.
