The Above-Basin Plumbing Matters

The discharge path has to lift wastewater to a point where normal gravity drainage can resume. The check/backwater valve helps prevent discharged wastewater from returning toward the basin, while the vent supports proper drainage-system operation and helps keep sewer gases out of occupied space.

Exact piping, valve, vent and electrical requirements depend on the application, equipment instructions, the current California Plumbing Code and the local authority having jurisdiction.

HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS

From Lower-Level Fixtures to the Main Drain

1. Fixtures drain into the sealed basin.

Wastewater from the connected lower-level fixtures enters the basin by gravity.

2. The liquid level rises.

A float or level control signals the pump when the basin reaches its operating level.

3. The pump lifts wastewater.

The pump sends wastewater up the discharge line.

4. Gravity drainage resumes.

Once the discharge reaches the building drainage system at the proper elevation, wastewater continues toward the sewer or approved disposal path.
