Flume Smart Water Monitor & Leak Alert Help

See Unexpected Water Use Sooner—Without Cutting Into the Main Water Line

Flume watches water use at a compatible residential water meter and sends alerts when usage looks abnormal. It can help reveal a running toilet, irrigation issue, continuous low-flow leak or other unexpected water use—while Water Fixers can help diagnose and repair the plumbing problem behind the alert.

What Flume Does—and What It Does Not Do

Flume is a whole-home water monitor. It reads water use at the meter, helps spot unusual patterns and sends alerts through the Flume app. It is not a pressure regulator, it does not automatically shut off the home’s water by itself, and an alert does not replace professional leak diagnosis when the source is hidden.

A Different Kind of Leak-Protection Tool

Monitor Water Use

Track minute-by-minute household water use and see patterns that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Receive Leak Alerts

Get notified when water use matches alert rules for continuous flow or unusually high flow.

No Pipe Cutting

The battery-powered sensor straps onto a compatible water meter rather than being installed inline.

Understand Usage

Use app data and usage breakdowns to better understand where household water may be going.

HOW FLUME WORKS

From the Water Meter to the Flume App

1. Sensor at the meter. The Flume Water Sensor straps onto a compatible meter and reads the changing magnetic field associated with water flow.

2. Radio signal to the bridge. The battery-powered sensor communicates by 915 MHz radio frequency to a bridge inside the home, so Wi-Fi and an outlet are not required at the meter box.

3. Bridge connects to Wi-Fi. The indoor bridge requires power and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, then sends usage data securely to the cloud.

4. App displays usage and alerts. Homeowners can review water-use patterns and receive notifications when usage meets configured alert conditions.

A Flume Alert Is a Clue—Not the Repair

The monitor can tell you that water is moving when it may not be expected. The next job is determining whether that flow is normal use, irrigation, treatment equipment, a fixture problem or a concealed plumbing leak.

Flume Alerts

Useful for noticing continuous or high-flow water use sooner.

Water Fixers Diagnoses

If the source is not obvious, leak detection can narrow down what is actually leaking and where to investigate.

Plumbing Gets Repaired

The appropriate repair may involve a toilet, valve, supply line, underground line, concealed pipe or another component.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Start With Water-Meter Compatibility

Flume reports that its monitor works with about 95% of U.S. residential water meters, but compatibility is not universal. The sensor needs a compatible meter; it does not simply clamp onto any water pipe.

Check before purchasing: the meter brand/model, whether the meter is mechanical rather than an incompatible ultrasonic or multijet design, whether your water provider allows access to the meter box, and whether the bridge can maintain a reliable connection from inside the home.

Flume’s official compatibility checker is the best place to verify a specific meter before ordering.

WHEN FLUME NOTIFIES YOU

What Could Be Causing the Water Use?

A leak alert does not always mean a burst pipe. Common causes of continuous or unexpected use include:

  • Running or silently leaking toilets
  • Dripping faucets or hose bibs
  • Irrigation that runs longer than expected
  • Water softener regeneration or other normal equipment cycles
  • Appliance supply-line leaks
  • Underground service-line or irrigation leaks
  • Concealed plumbing leaks behind walls, floors or slabs

If you cannot account for the flow, Water Fixers can help move from the alert to an actual plumbing diagnosis.

CURRENT FLUME ALERT TOOLS

Customizable Alerts Help Separate Normal Use From Problems

Flume’s current app creates a Smart Leak Alert and High Flow Alert during setup, and homeowners can adjust alert sensitivity for their property. Flume also offers tools such as Do Not Alert Schedules and Expected Usage to reduce nuisance notifications from known activities such as irrigation or water-treatment cycles.

Smart Leak Alert

The current default is designed to flag continuous water use after two hours, which can be useful for lower-flow problems such as running toilets and pinhole or slab-leak patterns.

High Flow Alert

The current default looks for at least 5 gallons per minute lasting 15 minutes or longer. Homeowners can change the thresholds to better match their normal peak use.

Expected Usage

Known recurring use can be identified so the system is less likely to repeatedly treat normal patterns as a leak while still monitoring for meaningful changes.

CITY WATER + PRIVATE WELL QUESTIONS

Flume Needs a Compatible Water Meter

For a typical municipal-water home, the Flume sensor is mounted at the property’s compatible water meter. Private-well properties are different: many do not have a compatible meter at all, so a Flume sensor cannot simply be attached to the well pump or pressure tank.

If a well property has a separate compatible meter—or is considering adding metering—confirm the proposed setup with Flume before purchasing. Water Fixers can evaluate the plumbing side of a well system, pressure concerns and meter installation questions without promising that every private-well configuration will support Flume.

WHOLE-HOME LEAK PROTECTION

Flume, Moen Flo and a PRV Do Different Jobs

These devices can complement one another, but they are not interchangeable. Choose based on the problem you are trying to solve.

Flume: Monitor + Alert

Meter-based water-use monitoring with alerts and no inline pipe installation. Flume alone does not close the main water valve.

Moen Flo: Monitor + Shut Off

An inline smart valve that monitors the main line and can automatically shut off the home’s water during qualifying events.

PRV: Control Pressure

A mechanical pressure-reducing valve protects plumbing from excessive incoming pressure. It does not monitor usage or send leak alerts.

Do You Need a Plumber to Install Flume?

Usually, no. Flume describes its standard installation as a homeowner-friendly setup that does not require cutting into the plumbing, and many installations can be completed in about 15 minutes. That is different from an inline smart shutoff such as Moen Flo.

Where Water Fixers becomes useful: when a Flume alert points to water use you cannot explain, when you need professional leak detection or repair, when shutoff or pressure problems are involved, or when the property’s plumbing needs modification rather than simply attaching a sensor to an existing compatible meter.

Flume Smart Water Monitor FAQs

Direct answers about compatibility, installation, alerts and what to do when the monitor detects unexpected use.

Flume monitors water use at a compatible residential water meter and sends usage information and alerts to the Flume app. It can help homeowners notice unexpected continuous or high-flow water use sooner.
Not by itself. A standard Flume installation monitors and alerts but does not include an inline shutoff valve. Separate third-party integrations may exist, but they are different from the Flume meter sensor itself.
Usually no. The sensor straps onto a compatible meter without cutting pipe, and Flume says most homeowners can complete the standard installation themselves. Plumbing service may still be needed if an alert reveals a real leak or the property needs plumbing changes.
No. The sensor at the meter is battery powered and communicates by radio frequency to the indoor bridge. The bridge, not the meter sensor, requires power and a compatible 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection.
Flume says its radio connection has been used at long distances and cites ranges up to about 1,500 feet in some conditions. Actual performance depends on the property, meter pit, lid, obstructions and placement of the indoor bridge.
No. Flume reports compatibility with about 95% of U.S. residential meters, but some meter types are not compatible. Check the exact meter before purchasing and confirm that your water provider allows access to the meter box.
No. It can show unexpected water movement and usage patterns, but it does not physically locate a concealed pipe leak. If the source is not obvious, professional leak detection may still be needed.
Flume requires compatible water metering. Many private-well systems do not have a compatible meter, and the sensor cannot simply be attached to a well pump or pressure tank. Confirm any well-specific setup with Flume before purchasing.
Flume currently states that devices purchased directly from Flume or Amazon include core features without a monthly fee. Partner-program terms can vary, so check the terms attached to the way the device is obtained.
First rule out expected use such as irrigation, fixtures, appliances and water-treatment cycles. Check obvious toilets and faucets. If water is still moving and you cannot identify the cause, contact Water Fixers for leak diagnosis and plumbing repair.
