Beware of proprietary equipment. Brand-only replacement filters, limited repair options, parts that may be discontinued, and don't get locked in. Choose quality components and long-term serviceability. Water Fixers Plumbing & Filtration, 805-928-6444.

Why Choose a Water Fixers Water Softener?

Choose for your water today—and for the years you will own it.

A good softener should fit your hardness, household demand and plumbing, with a clear path for salt, maintenance, parts and repairs. Water Fixers helps you compare five systems and supports the equipment after installation.

Quality Components. A Clear Service Plan. A Local Team.

We source our systems’ components from trusted, quality-focused suppliers and select them for reliable performance, compatibility and long-term service. Our goal is a softener that makes sense to install, maintain and repair—not simply equipment with an attractive purchase price.

We advise against unnecessary proprietary lock-in when specialized valves, electronics or assemblies leave you with fewer choices later. Parts support, service costs and local repair options deserve to be understood before you buy.

Size from the water

Measured hardness, daily use and simultaneous flow matter more than a large grain number or home square footage alone.

Plan for future repairs

Valve, brine, bypass, drain and resin problems should be diagnosed individually. A service issue does not automatically mean complete replacement.

Support after installation

Water Fixers works with the plumbing and treatment equipment together, from testing and installation to regeneration checks and repair.

Serviceable Design vs. Proprietary Dependence

A softener includes a control valve, resin tank, brine/salt system, bypass and plumbing connections. Some designs use widely supported components; others depend on manufacturer-specific parts. The useful question is how your exact model can be maintained and repaired.

Proprietary does not automatically mean inferior equipment. We recommend comparing the complete ownership picture. No part is interchangeable just because it looks similar; model specifications and compatibility still need to be verified.

OUR FIVE-MODEL LINEUP

Compare Capacity, Salt Dose, Flow and Layout

Water Fixers offers cabinet and separate-tank options. These are our current published model figures. Final selection should use actual hardness, household water use, simultaneous demand, pressure, plumbing and available service space.

Read capacity and salt dose together. SoftFlo-SE and SoftFlo-SEC both list 36,000 grains, at 9 lb and 6 lb salt respectively. That is a useful equipment comparison. Actual salt use depends on hardness, household demand, settings and regeneration frequency. Peak flow does not replace realistic service-flow planning.

Where the Higher-Efficiency Models Add Value

Water Fixers SoftFlo SEC residential water softener

SoftFlo-SEC and SmartSoft

The published packages include 10% crosslink resin, up-flow regeneration, proportional brining and variable reserve capacity.

  • Proportional brining: salt dosing can respond to the capacity that needs restoring, as programmed for the installed control.
  • Variable reserve: the control can adjust its reserve strategy rather than using the same fixed reserve in every situation.
  • Up-flow regeneration: a different arrangement from the published down-flow SoftFlo-SE configuration.
  • A choice of layouts: SoftFlo-SEC is the cabinet option; SmartSoft offers more published capacity in a two-tank layout.

The value depends on correct sizing and setup. The largest model is not automatically the right model for every home.

CARE THAT FITS THE EQUIPMENT

Softener Maintenance Has Its Own Schedule

A softener does not follow an RO annual-filter/three-year-membrane schedule. It needs salt management, correct regeneration settings and checks of the valve, brine system and resin performance. Timing depends on equipment, water conditions and use.

Between service visits

Check salt level as appropriate, keep loading access clear and notice changes in water feel, salt use, visible leaks or control errors.

At a service review

Check hardness reduction, programmed settings, regeneration, brine draw/refill, salt bridging or mushing, bypass position and visible connections.

When a problem appears

Hardness returning, unusual water use, abnormal brine-tank filling or a leak calls for diagnosis. Valve, brine or programming issues may be repairable.

An annual check-in can help keep service from being forgotten. Resin replacement is a separate condition-and-performance decision; it is not an automatic three-year purchase. A separate prefilter also has its own maintenance requirements.

A Better Installation Helps You Own It Longer

Keep the bypass, control valve, brine tank, salt-loading area and drain/overflow connections accessible. Water Fixers also considers pressure, shutoffs, existing filtration and the surrounding plumbing.

Local support matters when your water, household use or equipment behavior changes. You have one company to call for the softener and its plumbing connections.

We Repair Many Other Softener Brands, Too

Already own GE, Kenmore, Sears, Culligan, Kinetico, Fleck, EcoWater or another system? We evaluate many existing brands, subject to condition, access and compatible parts availability. The brand name alone does not establish whether a particular model is repairable.

Keeping supported equipment may be the better investment. We consider the valve, brine system, resin, controls, leaks and plumbing before discussing replacement. If obsolete parts or multiple failing components change that calculation, we can explain the options.

Compare the Whole Ownership Cost

Ask for the installed price and expected service scope, then compare salt, regeneration water, maintenance labor, replacement parts and likely repairs over the same period. Review the written warranty, including exclusions and labor.

  1. What hardness and usage assumptions were used for sizing?
  2. What capacity is listed at the proposed salt dose?
  3. Can the valve, controls, bypass and brine components be serviced separately?
  4. Who can obtain compatible parts and service the unit locally?
  5. What happens if a component is discontinued?

A purchase should make sense beyond installation day. Ask us to compare the options for your actual water and household.

Choose the Right Treatment for the Problem

Ion-exchange softeners primarily address hardness. Salt-free conditioners, whole-house filters and under-sink RO perform different jobs. Taste, odor, sediment, staining or a specific contaminant concern may call for testing and a different treatment path.

Some homes use both softening and drinking-water RO. See why serviceability also matters when choosing RO.

Water Softener Ownership Questions

Are proprietary softeners always a bad choice?

No. We advise understanding the exact model’s parts supply, service requirements and total costs. Our recommendation is to avoid unnecessary dependence on one specialized part or supplier.

Are all Water Fixers softener parts universal?

No. Compatibility depends on the installed valve, tank, controls and configuration. We identify the correct components for the equipment.

Is SmartSoft automatically the best choice?

No. It has the largest published capacity in this lineup, but the right model depends on hardness load, water use, simultaneous flow and installation space.

Must softener resin be replaced every three years?

No. Resin service depends on condition, performance, water and equipment requirements. The RO membrane checkpoint does not apply to softener resin.

Will you repair equipment you did not install?

We evaluate many other brands and recommend a practical maintenance, repair or replacement path based on the equipment and compatible parts.
