High-Water Alarm
Reduce use of fixtures connected to the basin and arrange diagnosis. A high level can result from pump, float, control, discharge or capacity problems.
Pump Does Not Start
The cause can include power, control or float issues as well as a failed pump. Diagnosis should separate those possibilities.
Pump Runs but Level Stays High
A restricted discharge path, check-valve problem, worn pump or system condition may prevent normal evacuation of the basin.
Frequent or Strange Cycling
Short cycling, unusually long run times or repeated starts can point to float, check valve, inflow or pump-performance problems.
Odor Near the Basin
Odor can involve basin seals, venting, drainage or wastewater conditions and should not automatically be blamed on the motor.
Lower-Level Backup

Find the Failed Component Before Replacing the Pump
A professional diagnosis should confirm whether the pump is receiving power, whether the float or level control moves and switches correctly, whether the alarm is functioning, whether the discharge path is open and whether the check valve is behaving normally.
The goal is to repair the actual failure rather than replace an expensive pump when the problem is somewhere else in the system.

The Pump Is Only One Possible Cause
Pump
Motor, impeller, internal wear, blockage or performance problems can prevent the pump from moving wastewater normally.
Float / Level Control
A stuck, obstructed, damaged or poorly positioned control can keep the pump from starting or stopping correctly.
Check Valve
If wastewater falls back toward the basin after each cycle, the system can run more often and lose effective capacity.
Discharge Piping
Restriction, damage or an inappropriate discharge condition can limit flow even when the pump is running.
Alarm / Control
A high-water alarm or control problem can be separate from the pump itself and should be tested as its own component.
Drainage System
A branch drain or sewer blockage can create similar symptoms. The affected fixtures and basin behavior help separate the causes.
SYSTEM-WIDE TROUBLESHOOTING
A Useful Diagnosis Follows the Wastewater Path
Start where wastewater enters the basin, then follow the control sequence and discharge path. Is the basin filling? Does the float move freely? Does the pump start? Does the liquid level drop? Does the discharge hold after the pump stops? Does the alarm activate at the intended high-water level?
Those observations can narrow the problem much faster than assuming every alarm means “replace the pump.”
HIGH-WATER ALARM
If the Alarm Is Sounding, Reduce Wastewater Use
A high-water alarm is a warning that the liquid level has risen above its normal operating range. Reduce or stop use of the fixtures connected to that ejector basin until the cause is understood. Continued toilet, sink, shower or laundry use can add more wastewater and increase backup risk.
If sewage is already overflowing or entering occupied space, use the Emergency Plumber path. If the basin is high but contained, request ejector-pump diagnosis.

Three Components Worth Checking Before Blaming the Pump
Float or level control: tells the system when to start and stop pumping.
Check valve: helps keep discharged wastewater from returning toward the basin after the pump stops.
High-water alarm: provides a separate warning when the basin rises above the normal operating range.
These components interact with the pump and discharge piping, so a repair visit should evaluate the operating sequence rather than inspect one part in isolation.

The Right Choice Depends on the Failure and the Rest of the System
Repair May Make Sense
The pump is serviceable and the failure is isolated to a float, control, alarm, check valve, connection or another correctable component.
Replacement May Make Sense
The pump itself has failed, performance is no longer appropriate, reliability has become poor, or the existing equipment no longer makes sense for the application.

Why is my sewage ejector pump alarm going off?
