Nitrates in Well Water: Testing and Treatment Limits

Nitrate cannot be diagnosed by sight, taste or smell. A certified laboratory test is necessary, especially for a private drinking-water well.

What you may notice — and what it cannot prove

What it is and where it can come from

Nitrate and nitrite are nitrogen compounds regulated in public drinking water. California notes associations with fertilizer, septic systems, animal waste, wastewater and other rural sources.
They can reach groundwater through land use and groundwater movement. A possible source near one property does not prove nitrate is in that well.
Nitrate is invisible in a glass and is measured only by a laboratory result.

What testing can tell you

Use a state-certified drinking-water laboratory. Private-well owners should follow official sampling instructions and compare results with California guidance. Retest after treatment and as recommended.

Nitrate is a regulated drinking-water contaminant. Use California/EPA guidance and contact the appropriate health authority for results above a drinking-water standard.

Plumbing and equipment

Nitrate generally does not create a visible plumbing or scale signature; equipment choice must be based on the measured result and water chemistry.

Treatment options after testing

Nitrate-selective ion exchange or an appropriately rated point-of-use RO system may be used when properly designed. The exact device must identify nitrate reduction and operating conditions.
Whole-house or point-of-use? Point-of-use treatment may protect a drinking/cooking tap; point-of-entry design has different capacity, waste and monitoring requirements.

Treatment limitations

Carbon, sediment filtration, UV and ordinary softener resin are not reliable nitrate treatment. Not every RO system is rated for nitrate reduction; confirm the exact device documentation and operating conditions.
